Trout Fishing Season

Trout are a favorite fish to catch in the U.S.A. To regulate the fishing of trout, certain laws have been laid down. There is a trout fishing season. There are limits on the number of trout that can be caught and size limits as well. Size limits are in the form of a minimum size the trout must be to be caught.

Trout are active at dawn and dusk and these are the perfect time to prospect for trout. You can catch Lake Trout at any time of the day except the morning. When mid spring arrives, you need to look for trout between 35-45 feet deep. In late spring you need to go 50-65 feet deep to look for trout. The depth varies according to the time of the year. The depth also varies in different lakes. All common species of trout are found during spring.





As trout fishing season enters summer, trout enjoy the colder temperature by moving deeper. At this time you have to fish well below 40 feet. Do not assume however, that the trout are at the deepest region of the lake. The trout stay at the 53 degree level. This is due to small baitfish lying suspended here that the trout feed on. Trout generally hit prey from dawn until 10:30 in the morning. Brown trout are active at dusk. Splake is ideally fished till the end of May and for Rainbow Trout it is June and July. The ideal trout fishing season for Brook Trout is June to early July.

September and October are the time when trout spawn. They move up to the shallower upper layers of water or rocky shorelines. Brown Trout are easily fished for through September and October at the shallow rocky shorelines. Lake Trout are available in winter at depths of 15-40 feet. Brook Trout and Splake are ideally fished just after winter fishing season opens in January. Brook Trout are found at depths of less than 10 feet. Splake go deeper than this.
